On Long Engagements

While at Jeromy's cousin's wedding, we ran into a lot of people we hadn't seen since we became engaged. This lead to a lot of questions that we haven't quite figured out how to answer yet. While I'll never complain about showing off my ring, the questions about when we were getting married were a bit more difficult to handle. While most people simply took our standard response of "We are having a long engagement" at face value, some others decided to pry a bit more.
Person X: "So have y'all set a date yet?"
Me: "Oh, we are having a long engagement."
Person X: "How long?"
Me: "We are thinking 2016 sometime."
Person X: "Getting cold feet about that engagement?"
Whoa. WHOA.

This person was probably "just joking around" and hopefully didn't realize how out of line that question was. No, prying sir, we are not having cold feet about our engagement.

In reality, a long engagement is exactly what we want. We were job hunting, and CPA exam-ing, and finishing school, and making big life decisions that really determine where our lives head these next few years. And while that is scary and overwhelming enough as it is, flower choices and music selections haven't had a place in our lives just yet.

I appreciate the looks of understanding I get when I mention a long engagement to people (usually recent brides or brides-to-be). Wedding planning is no joke, and now that we are finally settled in our little routines (with full time jobs, salaries, and benefits for both of us), I think we are finally ready to start make plans to walk down the aisle.
